SHOULD INFECTED TEETH BE EXTRACTED BEFORE CARDIAC SURGERY?

In American hospitals it is customary to extract infected teeth from patients who are to undergo cardiac surgery to avoid postoperative complications. A study conducted at the Mayo Clinic (USA), showed that the extraction of these teeth with infection may not really protect against them. Dr. Kendra Grim, an anesthesiologist at the aforementioned clinic and author of the study published in the journal Annals of Thoracic Surgery, reported that the aforementioned patients were at increased risk of dying from stroke or kidney failure, and perhaps prior extraction would not help prevent them.

The study was based on observation of 205 patients operated on between 2003 and 2013.

Clínica Noguerol recommends patients with cardiac problems to follow a protocol of dental and periodontal care as the most effective way to avoid these complications.
