Periodontitis increases the risk of coronavirus complications.

COVID-19 is associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response that in some cases can have serious systemic complications. Similarly, periodontitis (pyorrhea), which is an infectious disease affecting the teeth and gums, produces inflammation at a general level in the organism.

Through this inflammatory response, periodontitis is related to some diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Currently, periodontitis is considered a risk factor for the development of a fatal event such as myocardial infarction and is a complication of diabetes. Patients with poorly controlled diabetes have more aggressive periodontitis, and patients with more advanced periodontitis have more difficulty controlling their glycemic index.

Research conducted in Qatar on 568 patients shows the relationship between periodontitis and the severity of complications in patients who have been infected with SARS-CoV-2.
The results of this study indicate that patients who become infected with coronavirus and have periodontitis have a 5-fold increased risk of being admitted to an ICU on life support and an 8-fold increased risk of dying from complications of COVID-19 disease.
